Caroline and I are starting to restore a historic house in North Knoxville and would like to share our progress with you as we go along. We expect it will take between 6 and 8 weeks to complete. The home was built in 1930, so we would like to keep as much of the original character and architectural integrity as we can. Here is what we plan to do:
- Take out drop ceilings, restore original ceilings if possible (can’t tell how much damage has been done to them because they are covered in the drop ceiling tiles)
- Pull up carpeting, restore original hardwoods if possible
- Renovate master bathroom – floors, bath, vanity, tile, fixtures, etc
- Add 2nd full bathroom
- Add hallway for access to 2nd bathroom without having to go through a bedroom
- Tear down wall to extend kitchen
- Re-do entire kitchen – floors, cabinets, appliances, fixtures, ceiling, etc
- Paint entire interior
- Replace all windows
- Replace all outdated electrical and plumbing
- New HVAC unit and duct work
- Repair wrap-around porch – new flooring, new ceiling, add support columns and railing
- Replace rotted boards, power-wash and re-paint exterior
- Fix and repair roof
- Landscaping

I just have to say looking at your photos brings back terrible memories.
I did the exact same thing with a house in North Knox in 2008. My investment house became known as my “liability house” in the process. Of course my biggest mistake was a poor choice in hired help – something tells me you already know better! Good luck with this. They can be loads of fun.
